This unusually designed roof was awarded ‘Best Detailing’ at the 2021 SPRA Awards (Single Ply Roofing Association) in partnership with the manufacturer Protan UK. This unique house built in Tatsfield in 1986 by award-winning architects David Richmond Associates is a geodesic dome structure, based upon the ideas originally developed in the 1940’s by American designer Richard Buckminster Fuller.
For our team, this bespoke roofing project required a high level of attention to detail. With surface of 450m2, this roof is made up of several intersecting triangular elements on each side. Protan laminated metal was used to form sharp lines on every ridge and valley. Each panel was successfully defined using Protan’s single ply roof membrane giving the dome the high quality appearance the original architect was looking to achieve. The roof required over 50 sheets of laminated metal which we cut and bent on site by hand. Protan Omega profiles were used at the top of the Dorma windows to channel rainwater down either side of the roof and into the gutter below. Bespoke rooflights were installed as part of the build and the roof comes with a 20 year warranty with a life expectancy of 40 years.
“Our unusual project required a different approach and Exterior Homecare delivered exactly that. From the outset, they took the task very seriously and drew upon their experience to adapt to the requirements of this build. They helped us to make informed decisions at every stage, by presenting detailed solutions to every challenge faced, clearly explaining all the possible implications with each choice. The whole team were a pleasure to have on site. They were respectful, reliable and conscientious which made the whole experience straightforward, which is not something you often say about having building work done! We would recommend Exterior Homecare for any complex and bespoke roofing project.”
